Rapid High-throughput SARS-CoV-2 Infection Identification Strategy

The project is implemented by the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology (Polish Academy of Sciences).

The main goal of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of a group testing strategy developed at the Nencki Institute for use in screening for SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The research at the Nencki Institute includes an asymptomatic population of young people who do not meet the epidemiological criteria for testing, but who come into contact with individuals from high-risk populations – hospital patients, homeless shelter residents, etc. The survey is conducted among medical students throughout Poland.


The project result will be the development of a strategy for implementation of group testing for SARS-CoV-2 as a screening method in Poland. An IT platform will also be designed to manage, store, and analyze the results of the group tests.

The role of The Digital Science and Technology Center

CNT, as a co-researcher of the project, includes in the scope of its research the development of experimental environment for the pilot implementation of the SONAR system, as a part of the experimental environment for processing results of epidemiological pool tests for use in predictive analytics and decision support, secure archiving environment and at level 3 of technology readiness (TRL 3) for proof of concept validation.

The obtained results will allow to build a modern database in order to prepare the environment for the construction of AI/ML models for online forecasting of potential new COVID-19 outbreaks and dynamic visualization of the predicted changes in the development of the epidemic on the map of Poland. This will help to build central/regional algorithms of conduct (including the development of “what if” scenarios) and action strategies for central and local authorities based on reliable, real data.
